Can you text an AI companion in iMessage?

Vent Now

Vent Now

September 21, 2026

Yes. Vent Now lets you text Aspen, an AI emotional support companion, inside the Messages app on your iPhone: a normal iMessage thread, grey bubbles from her, blue bubbles from you, Delivered underneath.

That is unusual. Almost every other AI companion lives behind its own app icon, which means talking to it is a decision you have to make. Texting is not a decision. You already have Messages open.

We make Vent Now, so read this knowing where we stand. Every claim about another product below comes from that company's own page, and those pages are linked at the bottom so you can check us.

Can you text an AI companion in iMessage?

You can text Aspen. The landing page at ventnow.ai/text-aspen is not a description of the feature, it is the feature: Aspen's first messages arrive one at a time behind a typing indicator, exactly the way they will arrive later in your own thread.

Her opening lines are short and lowercase. She says hey, she says her name, she says people text her when things are heavy, that she will remember what you share, and that she will check in on you. Then she asks what brought you here today.

The reason that matters more than it sounds: the hardest part of using any emotional support app is the thirty seconds before you open it. You have to decide you are someone who needs an app right now. Sending a text is not a decision about yourself. It is just a text.

One Vent Now user put it plainly in an App Store review: "Having someone available 24/7 who remembers has been very valuable for me." The thread in Messages is the shortest distance to that.

How do you set up texting with Aspen?

Five steps, once, and then you never think about it again.

  1. Open ventnow.ai/text-aspen and read the conversation. Tap Continue at the end.
  2. Answer a short set of onboarding questions about what you want support with. These carry over, so Aspen's first reply starts from what you said rather than from nothing.
  3. On the last step, enter your mobile number and tap Enable texting. There is no pairing code and no verification dance. Your number is how Aspen recognizes you, and Vent Now says it is never shared.
  4. Send the first message. The button opens Messages with an opener already typed, because the thread has to start from your side. You can also just text the number from your iPhone.
  5. Aspen texts back in that thread, and that is where the conversation lives from then on.

Two honest caveats on setup. It is iMessage only for now, so this is an iPhone feature, and the number field is built for US mobile numbers. And if the whole idea of a number in your Messages list is not for you, that same screen lets you skip texting and use the web chat instead.

Nothing here requires you to download anything. Vent Now does have iPhone and Android apps and a web version, and it runs even better on the native apps, because mood tracking, emotional insights, guided breathing and the quizzes live in the app. Texting is the doorway, not the whole house. A subscription is required to keep using Vent Now; current terms are on the pricing page.

What is it actually like to text an AI companion instead of opening an app?

Different in one specific way: the conversation stops being an activity and becomes a thread.

An app session has a shape. You open it, you have a session, you close it. A text thread has no shape. You send four words in a checkout line, you get a reply while you are walking to your car, you answer it at 11pm from bed. Aspen remembers the earlier parts, so the fragments add up to something instead of resetting.

That is the whole argument for texting. Not that it is more advanced, but that it survives contact with a real day. If you are reaching for your phone at 2am because the apartment is too quiet, the shortest possible path matters. That is also why we wrote a separate page about feeling lonely: the problem is rarely that people lack tools, it is that the tools ask too much at the exact moment you have the least to give.

Can you text ChatGPT, Replika or Wysa in iMessage?

Not as a two-way conversation, based on each company's own documentation as of September 2026.

ProductTwo-way conversation in iMessageWhere the conversation actually lives
Vent Now (Aspen)Yes, after a one-time setupiPhone Messages, plus the iPhone and Android apps and the web
ChatGPTNot listedChatGPT apps and chatgpt.com; voice calls to 1-800-CHATGPT; WhatsApp in the European Economic Area
ReplikaNot listediOS and Android apps, my.replika.com in a browser, Meta Quest in VR
WysaNot listedAndroid, iOS and the web; a WhatsApp experience that Wysa says is currently limited to sleep

A few notes so the table is not doing all the work.

OpenAI's help page for 1-800-ChatGPT describes two ways in: calling 1-800-CHATGPT, which is free for 30 minutes a month in the US and Canada, and messaging a verified contact on WhatsApp, which the page says is available again in the European Economic Area. Neither of those is iMessage, and the page does not list SMS.

Replika's help center lists mobile apps, a browser version and Meta Quest headsets. No messaging channel.

Wysa's FAQ describes the Wysa app as software available on Android, iOS or the web, and its WhatsApp FAQ says that Wysa on WhatsApp is currently limited to improving sleep efficiency. So Wysa does reach outside its app, just narrowly and not into Messages.

When one of the others is the better pick

ChatGPT is the better choice when what you want is one general assistant that can also draft the email, plan the trip and look something up. Emotional reflection is one thing it does among hundreds.

Wysa is the better choice when you would rather be handed a structured exercise than an open conversation. Its care library is designed by its clinical team, and talking to the Wysa AI is free, which matters if cost is the deciding factor.

Replika is the better choice if you want a customizable companion persona and are interested in the VR experience, which Vent Now does not offer.

Vent Now is the better choice when the thing you actually need is somewhere to say the messy version, repeatedly, over months, and have it remembered. And when you want that to happen in the app you already have open all day.

What are the limits of texting an AI companion?

Worth knowing before you set it up.

The thread is text. Aspen also talks by voice, but that happens in the app, not in Messages.

Aspen is an AI. She can get things wrong, and she is not a person, a therapist or a diagnosis. Vent Now was built with a licensed therapist on the team and its content and guidance are reviewed by a licensed therapist, and that still does not make a text thread clinical care.

Texting is also easy in a way that can make it the only thing you do. It works best as a supplement to the people in your life and to professional support when you need it, not as a replacement for either.

And iMessage is a log. The conversation sits in your Messages app alongside everything else, which is convenient and also visible to anyone holding your unlocked phone. Vent Now encrypts user data, but your own device is your own device.

Frequently asked questions

Can you text an AI companion in iMessage?

Yes. Vent Now lets you text Aspen, its AI emotional support companion, in the Messages app on iPhone. You set it up once at ventnow.ai/text-aspen, and after that Aspen replies in an ordinary iMessage thread.

Can you text ChatGPT in iMessage?

Not according to OpenAI's own help page. It describes reaching ChatGPT by calling 1-800-CHATGPT and, in the European Economic Area, by messaging a verified contact on WhatsApp. iMessage and SMS are not listed as channels.

Do you need to download an app to text Aspen?

No. Once texting is set up, the conversation lives in Messages. Vent Now also has iPhone and Android apps and a web version, and it runs even better on the native apps because mood tracking, insights and voice live there.

Is texting an AI companion private?

Vent Now encrypts user data and says your phone number is used only so Aspen knows it is you, never shared. Read any app's current privacy policy before you share something sensitive.

Is texting an AI companion the same as therapy?

No. Aspen is an AI emotional support companion, not a therapist and not a crisis service. Vent Now was built with a licensed therapist on the team and its guidance is reviewed by a licensed therapist, but Aspen does not diagnose or treat anything.

What should you say in the first text?

Whatever the actual thing is. Something as plain as today was a lot and I do not want to get into it with anyone I know works fine. You do not owe an AI companion a tidy summary.
